Gamers to Help Adults Fighting Cancer

The upcoming DreamHack Austin is truly a dream for many passionate gamers. Thanks to 1UpOnCancer, it’ll also be a chance to help adults fighting cancer. From April 28-30, gamers will be able to stop by booth #710 and give generously to help others continue to hold onto their own dreams.

1UpOnCancer is a nonprofit organization that strives to provide financial assistance for adults fighting cancer. Founded in 2015 after Nintendo’s president and CEO Satoru Iwata passed away from cancer, the group is largely comprised of gamers and focuses upon the gaming community.

Thanks to the generosity of DXRacer, gamers who stop by the 1UpOnCancer booth will be able to enter the silent auction for a DX Racer gaming chair and WebAround. Unlike most conventional chairs, this model has a higher backrest to support your entire spinal column. There’s also a headrest pillow, conventional tilt mechanism and strong mesh material, all contributing to a better gaming experience. The winner will also receive a 56” The Big Shot Green Screen Webaround, allowing gamers using webcams to control their backdrop. The portable screen will fit most regular chairs as well.

Considered the world’s largest digital festival, DreamHack includes esports, PC LAN parties, console, tabletop, cosplay, gaming, hackathons and questing, as well as live music. DreamHack Austin will feature performances by Magic Sword, Mega Ran and Grimecraft on Friday, and Varien, Mr FijiWiji and Fractal on Saturday.

Attendees will also be able to choose from a wide variety of interactive panels over the three-day festival, including “Breaking into an Esports Career: How to Thrive in Your Dream Job”; “Japanese Street Fashion Q & A”; “Podcasting 101”; and “Women in Geek Girl Media”.

There are multiple variations of DreamHack events. Every year, DreamHack Summer and Winter events are held in Jönköping, Sweden. These are the two major DreamHack festivals and bring a mix of fans, amateur and professional players under one roof for a whole range of activities such as tournaments, music acts and other forms of esports related entertainment.

DreamHack also host events throughout the year in other areas of the world such as Europe and North America. Recent events have been held in Colorado, Canada, Georgia and France.

DREAMHACK MASTERS

In 2016, DreamHack established the DreamHack Masters series. This side of the DreamHack brand was brought about in order to create an esports event that focuses on showcasing the best esports talent from around the world. Separate to the traditional BYOC LAN events, the Masters series has featured teams such as Ninjas in Pyjamas, G2 Esports, Virtus Pro and SK Gaming fighting for prize pools reaching $450,000. So far, the Masters series has been held in Malmö, Las Vegas and soon to be Stockholm (August 2018).

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has been the sole esports title of the DreamHack Masters series so far. However, with the popularity of other titles constantly rising, it’s likely that we will see the brand feature more gaming titles.

BETTING ON DREAMHACK

DreamHack events attract some of the biggest names in esports such as Astralis, Ninjas in Pyjamas and Mousesports. Due to the popularity, DreamHack events are almost always available to bet on at various esports betting sites.

DREAMHACK WINTER

DreamHack Winter 2017 will be held in Jönköping, Sweden at the Elmia Convention Center. The tournament will run from Friday 1st December to Sunday 3rd where the grand final will be held in front of thousands of fans from around the globe. With a prize pool of $100,000, there’s everything to play for at DreamHack Winter 2017.

STRUCTURE & PRIZE DISTRIBUTION

This years event will feature a similar format to previous years. Prize money will be distributed as follows. $50,000 to first place and $20,000 to runners-up. Teams that are knocked out in the playoffs will receive $10,000. The bottom teams of each group (7th-8th) will receive $3,000 whilst those who finish 5th-6th will only receive $2,000.

The eight competing teams will be split into two teams of four. The group stage will commence on Friday 1st December. Only the top two teams from each group will move on to the playoffs.

Playoffs

Teams that reach the playoffs will play in a Bo3, single-elimination format. This stage will take place on Sunday 3rd December, ahead of the grand final later that evening.

THE TEAMS

The lineup has taken multiple forms since the tournament was announced. Fnatic were originally set to compete but were later replaced by BIG after schedule and personal issues forced their withdrawal. The American squad of Team Liquid were also forced abandon the event due to ongoing Visa issues of the team coach, Wilton “Zews” Prado. EnVyUs have now filled the space of Team Liquid.
